ESN goes Hiking (Harz)
On May 1st, a public holiday, we want to explore the fairytale and legendary landscape of the Harz Nature Park with you and climb the highest mountain there, the Brocken. At 1142m, the Brocken is the highest mountain in Northern Germany and offers a visibility of well over 200km in good weather. The region and the mountain are an integral part of German legends and mythology (e.g. Goethe).
There are also many typical German towns in the area, such as Wernigerode, which lies at the foot of the mountain.
Program:
In the morning at 7:45 a.m. the special train HBX (can be used with a semester ticket) leaves Potsdam directly to Wernigerode/Schierke (arrival around 11 a.m.). From there the hiking trail to the summit begins.
We want to have a picnic at the summit in nice, sunny weather (the forecast says 18 degrees).
The hike is about 5-6km long (each way) and you overcome 500 meters of altitude (each up and down). Good fitness and surefootedness are a prerequisite for participation. The walk to the summit takes around 1.5-2 hours, depending on your fitness level. There are well-developed and signposted hiking trails. We go back down roughly the same route.
After the descent we will still have time to look at the beautiful old town of Wernigerode.
What do you need to bring:
- The tour itself costs nothing, anyone can come along, physical fitness is a prerequisite
- Semester ticket/D-Ticket or day ticket etc. (own responsibility)
- enough water and food (!!!), even for a picnic. Please get it on Tuesday, Wednesday is a public holiday and all supermarkets are closed!
- Sturdy shoes, hiking shoes are ideal
- warm clothing!!! It's supposed to be sunny and warm, but in the mountains it can be cool and windy and the weather can change quickly.
Important to know:
We do not offer a competition to see who is first to the summit, but due to differences in physical fitness the group may not stay together the entire time (some are faster, some slower).
Please everyone run as quickly as they can and let us know if there is a problem.
Please also pay attention to other participants!!!
We will create a WhatsApp group where all information about the tour will be posted.
Possible individual alternatives to the hike:
- There is the possibility of taking a special steam locomotive to the summit, which is of course not very cheap, but the train is unique in the world.
- Instead of climbing the mountain, you can look at various beautiful old towns in the Harz.
