ESN Excursion: Idstein
Almost as if out of a Playmobil box, Idstein has one of the most remarkable collections of colourful German timber-frame houses, with most dating back to the 17th century and some going as far back as the 15th.
The witch tower, a remnant of the old castle, is the oldest building in the town (13th century). According to the archives of Idstein, the town had a witch problem or witch-persecution problem (depending on who you ask) in the 17th century.
Another point of interest is the union church of Idstein, which is decorated by oil paintings (17th century) from the Dutch Rubens school.
Unlike (practically) all of our previous trips this semester, Idstein is neither a wine town, nor a beer town (😢).
The meeting point is platform 1 in Frankfurt Hbf at 10.15, the train departs at 10.29.
